No surprise this one being in the list - most people that have heard it agree it is a cracking record. I remember the first time I heard this I was struck by how original it sounded - this band was a band that went their own way which is backed by the opening line of the album "I don't care what the critics say" and a further 3 minutes of Dave Couse stating everything he doesn't care about it - as an album opener it is second to none! "Endless Art" is a masterpiece - who else could write a song which consists solely of a list of the dead and make it compulsive listening every time you hear it. "Blind Faith" is a beautiful tune which sounds like it could be a love song until you listen to the words and realise he is blasting the Catholic Church in the most eloquent way. The album also contains cracking pop gems in the shape of "Take It Easy On Me", "Slipping Away" and "I Lied" - all could have been minor hits given the right conditions and luck. Finally, the title track "I Am The Greatest" is a cracker - this was one pissed off band - they knew they should have been huge, the critics all stated they should have been huge and they weren't - what the hell is wrong with people?
Some snippets of "I Am The Greatest" reviews:
"this headlong maelstrom of angst, bluster and corking ideas" - City Limits
"This album will move you. It will inspire feelings like you'd forgotten you ever had. It will remind you of your dreams, your desires, and how you once thought you could change the world. It could even change your life." - Melody Maker
"This is life-affirming stuff, undoubtedly cynical and perhaps even bitter, but retaining some glimmer of hope and resolution in spite of ll that. A-House are the finest band Ireland has ever produced. One day a statue will be erected somewhere on O'Connell Street to bear testament to this fact." - Hot Press
"I Am The Greatest is a throbbingly vibrant selection of melancholy ballads and caustic wild-edged rockers dripping with rage and frustration. " - Q
"'I Am The Greatest' is brave, snotty, loving, tuneful, abrasive, shitty, everything. The egotistical hosanna of that title isn't the half of it. A House are three people whose absolute belief in themselves has at last been justified." - Select
"wide Dublin brogue stamps originality on a series of fine pop songs" - Vox
